What a stunning day for a walk up Mount Tumbledown.
A big thank you to Brian Summers for sharing his knowledge with the group. Along the way he told us about the old stone crusher, the water tanks, and of course the Battle of Mount Tumbledown in 1982. We walked past bunkers and shell holes — lasting reminders of the aftermath of war.
Mount Tumbledown was the location of one of the final battles of the 1982 Falklands War, when it was taken from the occupying forces by the 2nd Battalion Scots Guards. The group also walked up to the Argentine kitchens, where we could visualise soldiers queuing for hot soup during the middle of winter — something that must have been very welcome.
We took time to sit and enjoy the incredible view of Stanley and the surrounding mountains before heading up to the memorial that marks the summit. Brian spoke to the group about the battle and the many lives lost. It was moving to learn more about the history, and we will always remember those who fought for our freedom.
Soon we were running out of time and began heading back down the mountain, picking an abundance of teaberries and a few wild strawberries along the way.
Thank you to Marty, Donna & Jo for volunteering always appreciated.
Big shout out to The Lodges for our packed lunches which we enjoyed in the sunshine.
Look forward to our next adventures!
