It was a beautiful, sunny day—perfect for visitors to enjoy the garden—as the Past Finders youth group hosted a vibrant and welcoming Open House at Cartmell Cottage on Saturday, 28th March.
With the sun shining brightly, a steady stream of guests arrived, eager to explore the cottage and relax in the garden. Our passionate group members greeted everyone with enthusiasm, guiding visitors through the house and sharing fascinating historical stories along the way.
Built in 1849, Cartmell Cottage is one of 30 kit houses sent from Britain to provide homes for military pensioners settling in the Islands. Today, its rooms are beautifully recreated in period style, transporting visitors through time—from the 1850s through later extensions in the 1940s and 1970s—showcasing how home life evolved across the decades.
Guests were also treated to a delightful selection of tea and cakes, generously donated by the youth group families and Museum staff. Every penny raised went directly to the Stephen Jaffray Memorial Fund, with an impressive total of £371.55 collected on the day.
A huge thank you goes out to everyone who visited, donated, and helped make the event such a success. Whether you baked delicious treats, volunteered your time, or simply came along to enjoy the history, your support made a real difference.
