On Thursday, 16th January, we had the incredible opportunity to go on board the NG Endurance.
What an experience it was! The group gathered at the Jetty Centre to meet Jamie and the team for a safety briefing, where they were fitted with lifejackets before boarding the Zodiacs—an adventure in itself!
Once on board the ship, we were each given our own identity tags. The team then led us up to the Ice Bar, where we met Adam, the ship’s historian. Adam delivered a fascinating presentation on Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914–1917), which proved invaluable for the youth group’s upcoming activities.
Louise then spoke about the scientific research conducted on board, including studying wildlife and collecting specimens. Jamie introduced the group to the ship’s undersea equipment and demonstrated the different types of drones used for tasks such as counting penguins.
After the lectures, we were treated to cookies and fizz—a well-deserved treat!
Jamie then gave us a guided tour of the ship, including a visit to the bridge, where we had the privilege of meeting the captain. Everyone even got the chance to sit in his seat! The crew were fantastic throughout, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone involved.
I think it’s safe to say we all left wanting to experience a full cruise on the NG Endurance. With its cutting-edge technology and outstanding facilities, she truly is a magnificent ship.
A huge thank you to Donna Ford and Jamie Coleman for organising such a fantastic day on board the NG Endurance.
