The Past Finders youth group hosted a vibrant and welcoming open morning at Cartmell Cottage on Saturday, 8th March, despite the weather not being on our side.
Though the clouds tried their best to dampen spirits, they couldn’t stop the steady stream of visitors eager to explore Cartmell Cottage. Our passionate group members greeted guests with enthusiasm, guiding them on engaging tours through the house and sharing fascinating historical tip bits along the way.
Built in 1849, Cartmell Cottage is one of 30 kit houses sent from Britain to provide homes for military pensioners settling in the islands. The rooms, beautifully recreated in period style, transport visitors through time—from the 1850s to extensions added in the 1940s and 1970s, showcasing the evolution of home life across the decades.
The group also delighted guests with delicious tea, cakes, and fresh homegrown vegetables, with every penny of the proceeds going directly to support the youth group’s activities. The result? An impressive £413.50 raised!
A huge thank you to everyone who visited, donated, and helped make the day a success—whether you baked those scrumptious cakes, shared your time, or simply came along to enjoy the history, you made a real difference.
