Shackleton Writing Competition – 25th January
On Saturday, 25th January, eleven students took part in a competition to write an article for the Albatross Newspaper about Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914–1917).
The day began with one group attending a lecture at Falklands College delivered by Emma Brook, while another group visited the Jane Cameron National Archives, where they were welcomed by Chloe, Helen, and Marcy.
At the Archives, the team had carefully laid out a wealth of research materials for the children to examine and take notes from. Chloe read aloud a telex message sent by Shackleton, adding an extra layer of historical significance to their research. The students were also able to use the computers and photocopier to aid their work. The Archives contain a treasure trove of newspaper articles, photographs, and government records related to Shackleton’s expedition and his visit to the Falkland Islands.
In the morning, both groups had an hour-long session at each location, ensuring they gathered key notes from both the lecture and archive materials.
After an information-packed morning, the students enjoyed a well-earned lunch at Falklands College before diving into the competition.
In the afternoon, each participant was given an A3-sized blank 'Albatross Newspaper' template, ready to create their very own article. They had access to photocopied images and research materials, but their challenge was to tell the story of Shackleton’s expedition using their own notes and understanding from the morning’s sessions. It was no small task, especially within the limited timeframe, but they all got stuck in—and soon, silence fell across the classroom as they focused on their work.
Each student was well aware of the incredible prize at stake—and what a prize it is! Four students will be selected to travel overseas to visit the Shackleton Museum in Athy, Ireland, with the added bonus of a visit to the SS Great Britain in Bristol. This exciting trip will take place in August this year, led by Sandra Alazia (Past Finders Leader) and Emma Brook (Manager of Falklands College and Trustee of the Falkland Islands Museum and National Trust).
All eleven students worked exceptionally hard, and we are immensely proud of their efforts. They gave it their all! Participants ranged in age from 10 to 15 years old.
The winners will be announced on Wednesday, 12th February, at a special reception at the Museum. We wish all the participants the very best of luck!
